What are my chances of being employed in and illustration or graphic design career career?
Q. I'm planning to attend the Academy of Art University, but i'm stuck between two majors. I wanted to know what my chances of being employed in illustration are and what my chances of being employed in graphic design are. Also, if i go into graphic design i would be interested in making Movie posters of CD covers, so if anyone knows of companies that specialize in these areas i would greatly appreciate it if you tell me.

A. You're chances are as good as any other job you might want to go into. Graphic design (and illustration for the matter) is a very competitive field. You really have to want to make that a career in order to succeed. If you're thinking of getting into it because you think it's going to be real laid back and easy I would find another career path. With that said though, I've been a graphic designer for 5 years and I love it. Part of my job as a designer is illustrations, so as a designer you really can get the best of both worlds. As for movie posters and cd covers, there aren't any companies that I know of that specialize in that. Film producers and record executive teams typically hire and artist from a full service advertising agency for… [cont.]

Q. I am planning to return to work (NHS) after my maternity leave finishes but am also thinking of starting my own buisness which i may be able to get off the ground before i am due to return to my employer. Can i work self employed whilst receiving SMP? I live in the UK. Anyone have any experience of this?

A. In Australia you are only restricted by your employment contract and only if it is in the same field as your job. You also have to declare all your income if you are on a pension and for tax purpses. I would assume the UK is very similar.

I am a self employed consultant. How much of my income should I be setting aside to cover my Fed taxes? 28%?
Q. I am now a self employed consultant as of last week. I filled out a w9 form for my customer. How much of my income should I be setting aside to cover my Federal taxes? I also live in Massachusetts, and we have a 5% State Tax as well, so that must be added to the amount as well. Does anyone know the average percent that I should be setting aside? I somehow think that 28% is a good figure? Please help! Thanks.

A. 15% for self-employment taxes. 5% for Massachusetts taxes. For federal income taxes, whatever your tax bracket is (may be anywhere from 10% to 28%). Then add it all.

The pay is quite a lot higher than most around here and she enjoys that fact My boyfriend drives truck for a beer distributor, mostly he "really likes" his job. He likes stopping in certain towns with his deliveries, seeing everybody, stopping at certain restaurants and eating lunch and talking to other truckers, he enjoys local delivery routes (within 100 miles) and is done at 5:30 every night. No weekends anymore, he'd rather be with his girlfriend. My son is also a truck driver and he "loves his job." He is so happy to be free of the third generation family business. A. I am sure that you are by no way the only self employed tradesman struggling at the moment, though it depends upon your trade of course. As times are hard at the moment and with many people being uncertain of the security of their own jobs. there is a substantial down turn in building work of all types, both in new builds and in remedial and renovation work. Many small tradesman have been used to making a decent living through local word of mouth and subbing for a small number of larger business'. As the recession continues to bite - and it is far far from over yet - you may need to use advertising to get your name to a wider potential clientele.

How long should you be employed before qualifying to refinance an auto loan?
Q. I would like to lower my monthly payments by refinancing my auto loan. I have a good credit score to refinance (700s). I was recently unemployed (from October to February). However, I am about to start a new job this March 1. How long should I be employed to qualify for an auto loan refinancing? (if there is such a requirement) Thanks, I appreciate it.
Asked by Chris - Mon Feb 22 22:37:09 2010 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I checked with a bunch of places when we were looking to refinance. When they'd give me a straight answer they said you have to be employed a minimum of 3 months before they'd consider you for refinancing. We also moved at the same time as the new employment started, which also proved to be a problem for some people. Or it could have been the combination of the move and new job. We have excellent credit so that wasn't a factor.

How much is the percentage income tax for self employed?
Q. I have 1 full time job, and the other one is more like part time. The one that I want to ask is the part time job. I work as programmer (self employed), how I calculate my income tax? How much percentage usually? because the regular job is about 25-30% of the salary. How much should I pay for the tax, for example, if I got a project that will pay me $5000/project, and I'm self employed for this? In layman term please! Thanks!
Asked by christie - Fri Aug 10 01:06:39 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Self-employed (SE) tax is 15.3% of 92.35% of net Schedule C profit. If you are getting paid 5,000 you would need to subtract from that what expenses you had. To make it simple, let's say the 5,000 is your profit. Your SE tax on that would be 706.48 (5,000 x .9235 x .153), on top of that you would also pay your regular federal tax which would be calculated based on taxable income, which would be taking your AGI and subtracting your standard deduction/itemized deduction and then subtracting your personal exemption(s). You would also have to take into account your state income tax as well.

How do I change my tax status from self employed to employed?
Q. I'm no longer working for myself, and now have a full time job. But I am still registered as self-employed. How do I change this?
Asked by big_phil_stone - Fri Aug 17 05:18:50 2007 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments

A. You need to contact your local tax office in the UK, and inform them that you are no longer self employed, and you`ll need to sign a declaration stating this. Unfortunately though, it should be really easy, but the tax office are so inefficient it takes a lot of nagging to get them to change their records. Myself, and a number of other people I know have had huge problems changing status. Even after signing the declaration, they keep sending you tax returns, which even though you are no longer self employed, you still have to fill in. Took 2 years before they stopped sending these out to me, even though they could see I was in full time employment by my tax payments, and payments from my employer.

A. First of all, you should calculate for all year income. Such as, salary x 12mth=? then take that total to deduct the deduction right as the law allow (40% of total income deductfor private cost but not over 60,000.- + 30,000 for private cost+Social insurance cost+Wife of husband cost(One side has not any work) 30,000 +Children 1man=15,000 but not over 2 men but if they are student you can deduct more 2,000.- per one + Life insurance + Annual interest of loan) then if the last remain is not over 100,000.- you mustn't pay any tax. But,if it opposite, take the last total x 10% and divide with 12mth. you will know the monthly tax payment. Xample, Mr.Boo has salary 30,000.-/mth All year = 30,000x12 360,000 Deduct 1st (360,000x40%=144000)… [cont.]

What is the diffrence between hired help compared to employed?
Q. Long story short, I need to know the difference between hired help compared to employed. This is very important, and resources would be great. I am trying to do research but I am coming up blank. I would also like to know what the laws and rights are for renters. Let's say someone your landlord did not fix something, and it was a major problem, so you had to fix it yourself. Do you have the right to bill the landlord and/or not pay rent for a certain period of time? All of this is in Iowa. Thank you!

A. Your question has nothing to do with hired help (which isn't a term of law) or being an employee (which is a term of law). It has to do with landlord/tenant relations. And that will depend on what is in your lease.

I am self employed what percentage of income tax should I save for tax?
Q. I have just become self employed as a consultant. What percentage of tax should I save to cover the year end taxes I will owe? I am doing a 2 year contract in Alberta. I am retired so no deduction for EI or CPP will apply. Instead of paying the tax I will owe at the end of this year I would like to pay the CRA monthly so I won't have a large bill owing. I thought about 40% as my income is high.
Asked by Boomer.62 - Mon May 3 12:33:24 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Depends on your total income and deductions, and which province you live in. Try filling in a 2009 form assuming you have the same deductions for next year, and estimating your net income. If you are in Ontario, the federal plus provincial rates are (roughly): Up to 40K - 22% 40 to 73K - 32% 73 - 126K - 38% over 126K - 41%. You'll also need to set aside something for CPP on self employment income. That's 9.9% of income over $3,500, up to $42,400. You get a deduction from income of 50% of that amount. That will give the total payable, you'll also get non-refundable tax credits, etc., so the actual amount you'll have to pay will be something less than those amounts.

Can a temporarily self employed person deduct medical premiums?
Q. I am a full time employee who receives medical insurance from my employer. I purchase insurance for my wife and kids through an independent program. (I could pay for it from my employer, but it is too expensive.) My homemaker wife was employed as an independent contractor to do some transcription work for a university. Can I deduct the family insurance premiums from her gross pay to (1) write off the premiums and (2) avoid much of the self-employment tax? Please provide references or tax publications from the IRS if possible. Thanks!

A. At no time are you able to deduct directly against self-employment income on Sch. C, health insurance premiums for the sole proprietor. Self-employed health insurance premiums are an adjustment to income on the form 1040. See page C-5 in the Sch. C instructions linked below. You are unable to deduct self-employed health insurance premiums as an adjustment to income if you were able to participate in any subsidized health plan maintained by your or your spouse's employer for any month or part of a month in 2008. Any amount paid for health insurance coverage for that month cannot be used to figure the deduction. See page 29 of the form 1040 instructions I have linked below. A. You must measure volume and weight (mass) to calculate density. You must correctly observe the meniscus in the graduate to accurately measure volume, however the meniscus depends upon the unknown liquid and may vary. You must weigh the graduate alone then the liquid + graduate to determine the weight of the liquid without the graduate. Both weights may include errors unless a precision balance (compensated for the buoyancy of air!) is used. Weight may be affected by distance from the center of the earth if you are at a significant elevation above (or below) sea level. When measuring a volatile substance some may evaporate changing both mass and volume during an experiment. Matching a changed volume to the original mass will cause an… [cont.]

A. I'm not sure that it can be in any clear, coherent manner. Reproductive rights vs. abortion bans doesn't have much to do with unity vs. diversity. A person could be on either side of both issues. About the only link I'll make is that when a politician talks of "unity," often that is a code word for forced unity, or the tyranny of the majority. In such an environment, the individual is often subsumed under the larger goals of society or gov't.
