From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The stock or capital stock of a business entity represents the original capital paid into or invested in the business by its founders. It serves as a security for the creditors of a business since it cannot be withdrawn to the detriment of the creditors. Stock is distinct from the property and the assets of a business which may fluctuate in quantity and value. SharesThe stock of a business is divided into shares, the total of which must be stated at the time of business formation. Given the total amount of money invested in the business, a share has a certain declared face value, commonly known as the par value of a share. The par value is the de minimis (minimum) amount of money that a business may issue and sell shares for in many jurisdictions and it is the value represented as capital in the accounting of the business. In other jurisdictions, however, shares may not have an associated par value at all. Such stock is often called non-par stock. Shares represent a fraction of ownership in a business. A business may declare different types (classes) of shares, each having distinctive ownership rules, privileges, or share values. Ownership of shares is documented by issuance of a stock certificate. A stock certificate is a legal document that specifies the amount of shares owned by the shareholder, and other specifics of the shares, such as the par value, if any, or the class of the shares. Say I had $1000.00 dollars invested in a stock, which was worth 100 dollars a share, say said stock loses 50 dollars, would I lose $500.00 dollars, or would I see my stock shares increase to 20 shares. Asked by Trent D - Sat Apr 19 17:42:01 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Your shares of stock would remain the same. You would have a "paper" or "unrealized" loss of $500.00. Asked by Chris - Mon Dec 8 13:28:36 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. The shareholders of the smaller company may be offered by the larger company: 1) A certain amount of cash per share (normally higher than the price at which the stock was previously trading at BEFORE the purchase of the company was announced. OR 2) A certain number of shares in the larger company in exchange for a certain number of shares of the smaller company. The stock price of the larger company may actually go down some when the deal is announced. Q. which one: 1) the common stock account increases due to paid capital, while the retained earnings account increases due to profitable operations. 2) the common stock account may sometimes have a negative balance, while the retained earnings account is always positive. 3) common stock is an asset account, while retained earnings is a stockholders equity account. 4) common stock has a normal credit balance, while retained earnings has a normal debit balance. Asked by C27 - Sun Feb 8 12:38:38 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. 1 is false - common stock and Additional Paid-In Capital (APIC - money received above par value) are different things, and retained earnings can increase from a million things besides just operations 2 is false - common stock account is nothing more than the par value of outstanding shares - you're multiplying 2 positive numbers, which cannot give you a negative number 3 is false - they're both shareholder's equity 4 is false - they go the same way. seriously, whoever is writing these questions for you is a complete and total moron. i usually get ticked off when people post their homework help questions here instead of the homework help section, but you actually have an excuse for needing real advice! 1 is the least stupid, though (even… [cont.] Answered by what? - Sun Feb 8 14:10:31 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Stock" US Stock Futures Retreat After Drop in Durable Goods Orders - BusinessWeek
