What is the difference between 403B plans and 401k?
Q. People at work have been complaining that the companys retirement plan sucks. We have 403b matching up to 3% and they put another 3percent without us having to do anything. Most people don't do it. All they have to do is open the accound and they get 3 percent free but they don't. Now they are asking the company for 401k plans and the company refused saying we already have a really good plan and you can do it on your own if you want. So why do they think 401K plans are so great? I'm thinking it is just them being stupid.

A. 401k and 403b plans are actually the same thing - 401k plans are for for-profit companies, and 403b plans are for non-profit companies, schools, government agencies, etc. The same funds and stocks are available to both 401k and 403b plans, it just depends on who the manager of your fund is, and which funds he has selected. You can have your HR department contact the fund manager and ask him to provide a wider range of funds to choose from, or you can open your own retirement account (an IRA, which functions very much the same as a 401k or 403b, except its a personal account) at any bank or financial broker. Usually companies have access to better deals/funds than individuals can access, so it's better to go through your company plan. … [cont.]

Do most retail jobs offer 401k plans and do I really need one?
Q. I'm 22 and just got offered a job as a full time cashier at a department store. They offer health insurance but don't have any savings plans such as 401k or anything similar. I want a job I can stay at for several years so I'm wondering if a 401k plan is even necessary and if any retail stores or entry level jobs do offer 401k plans. What do you guys think?

A. Next important thing in this life next to God & Family is to realize in this life it is important to SAVE. Before the economy went bad people didn't save and went into debt do not wait until a crisis to occur for you to realize that saving is important. You are 22 so I think that it is time for you to do it and try to get into school to better yourself. I know you are 22 and like to buy all the latest things which it is OK to treat yourself but do not go over board just remember "Old" struggling to pay bills plus still working to make ends meet or "Old" not worrying about monthly bills and retiring beautiful is your choice Take Care

I rolled two former employers 401k plans into a Rollover IRA about 2 years ago. I want to roll it into my new?
Q. company's 401k plan, but my broker says this cannot be done. They are calling what I have a rollover ira and telling me those cannot be rolled over into 401k plans. Can anyone tell me if this is accurate info?

A. You CAN roll a rollover IRA into your new employer's 401k plan under certain very specific conditions. 1. The new employer's 401k plan must specifically allow it. 2. Your IRA must contain ONLY former 401k monies, and not ANY money that you yourself have contributed. If they have ever been mixed at any time, that is called "tainted" money and you cannot roll into the 401k. 3. If you do decide to roll the IRA into the 401k, do not take possession of the money yourself. Have the custodian (the brokerage) send the money to the 401k plan. This is called a custodian to custodian transfer. "If you elect to open an IRA, keep the money separate or mix it only with other 401(k) or company-sponsored retirement fund money. That way, if you… [cont.]
