Are Blended Funds a wise choice instead of holding multiple funds in a 401K program?
Q. I am debating whether to put all of my current $$$ into the Fidelity Freedom 2040, offered in my 401k program, instead of holding multiple, seperate funds, such as Contra Fund, Euro/Overseas, Growth Company, Spartan, etc. One issue I see with multiple funds is multiple operating/management fees. With the Freedom 2040, the management is 0% and expense ratio is 0.82%. However, multiple funds, like I have now stacks them all up...so you have 0.2% with one, 0.5% with another, 0.4% with another, and so on. If I hold 6-7 funds, then isn't that adding up to more than just one fund would cost to maintain? I'm 27, and I am just looking for the BEST choice for me. Thanks!

A. if you have half your money in an account with a 0.2% expense ratio, and half in an account with a 0.5% expense ratio, then half your money gets hit for 0.2%, and half your money gets hit for 0.5%, for an overall expense ratio of 0.35%. You average together the expense ratios, you don't add them. If you have more money in one fund than another, it complicates the math, you have to do a weighted average. The Freedom 2040 has an expense ratio of 0.82%, which is likely to be higher than investing in the individual funds yourself. You are paying them to properly balance your funds. If you can do this yourself, you will save a slight amount of money. However, if you don't properly balance your investments, you might have a big loss. I… [cont.]
